My hubby is from Michigan, so I know all about the mitten and showing where you live on your hand. :) (I'm from Illinois, and you should see me trying to contort my hand into an "Illinois" shape to show where I'm from. Then we lived in Minnesota for a number of years. You can't make your hand do that shape. *teehee)
