Back again with #3 of adventures in bookbinding. (also posted at LJ).

When I first started learning about bookbinding one of the first things I learned was the importance of learning about and using the proper paper grain. "What?" you say. "Paper has a grain?" "I know, right?" I reply."Who knew?" I had no idea such a thing existed, but it does. For a more detailed explanation about what paper grain does, check out papercraftpanda's post HERE. Basically (aside from hand made paper) the wood fibers tend to align themselves all in the same direction during the manufacturing process.

For bookbinding you want the grain to run parallel to the spine for a reason. So if (like me) you're using letter sized 8.5 x 11"you want short grain that runs across the 8.5" side. Because when you fold it over from top to bottom (to make your folios for your signatures) you're creasing it across the short side, and folded edge will be your spine. (So the book block ends up being about 8.5 x 5.5" or a little less after trimming). In the beginning it was all a mystery to me trying to decide which way the grain of the paper, or cardstock, or book boards, were running, but now I usually tell by feel without any problem.

Do you really need short grain paper to make a book? Not necessarily, for the journals and art books I made for my grand kids I used regular copy paper (which is usually long grain), or cheap drawing pads from the $store.) But there are reasons (again check out the post I linked above, she explains them) that if you want a book you're going to keep and actually read, you really do want the correct grain. And personally if I'm putting all that time and effort into making a book I want to do it correctly. Here is an example of what can happen with the wrong grain: book on the left is short grain, book on the right (I thought was short grain, but obviously I messed this one up). See how the book on the right the pages won't stay down? I'm pretty sure the grain is running perpendicular to the spine instead of parallel. When I first opened it today, it wouldn't even stay like that, the pages all started slowly flipping to the opposite side until they all lay to one side (it was like it was possessed--creepy huh?)

(I don't know why these posted so small, but if you click on the pic it will go to a bigger version.)

Now on to the pretties:Read more... )

I'll be back soon with another post and more pics. The next book is what I like to "call the case of the disappearing title". I'll let you wonder about that til' I come back. LOL!

C&P'd from LJ

Hi, I'm back again with more AIB. Thanks for all the lovely comments to my first post.

I must say I have done many crafts and hobbies over the years: sewing, knitting, Crocheting, needlepoint, cross-stitch, soap-making, candle-making, writing stories, etc., etc; but the bookbinding has really grabbed me. It probably helps that I am retired and have the time. And I also have a dedicated space to work in so I don't have to get everything out and put it all away every time I want work on something. (which honestly right now is nearly every day, for a bit anyway).

As I mentioned in one of my replies to the previous post, the very first time I held a completed book in my hands that I'd made myself, I felt such a huge sense of accomplishment. (I think I actually even teared up a bit). LOL I think maybe I'm loving it so much because reading and books have always been a part of me, important-you know?. And I credit my mom for that, she read me a story every night, and every week or so when we went to the store she'd buy me a Little Golden Book. I must have had hundreds of them--now I wish I'd kept them. (I stupidly sold them off in a yard sale when we were clearing out my parent's house).

Anyway, I got sidetracked there, back to today's post.Read more... )

Hi all! It's been nearly awhile since I last posted and I only posted a few times last year.(pathetic, I know) Anyway, I'd like to post more often and since a started a new hobby last year, (I'd learned about hand bookbinding), so I'm going to try using my LJ and DW to chronicle my bookbinding adventures. (I just hope I can remember how to post pics--LOL!)

I first heard of fanfic bookbinding a few years ago through Nocturnus33 on LJ, who had posted pics of her own binds. She mentioned an online group (I don't remember the name now) where she learned how. It was on tumblr or one of the discord servers, or somewhere, but I've never caught on to navigating those places. So I started out watching YouTube videos, there's a ton of them out there--if interested in the process, just google bookbinding. For starting out I liked Sea Lemon, bitter melon, or DAS bookbinding, but there's plenty of other good ones.

Initially I mainly wanted to learn to bind so I could make hard copies of my own stories for myself. But I decided to start out just making some blank journals as practice, and to figure out what to do, and how to do it right.

So I decided to make some for my grand kids (there are 8 of them ranging in age from 4 to 14). I used a lot of re-used or inexpensive supplies like heavy cardboard to make the boards for covers, scrap booking paper to cover the boards, cheap sketch pads from the $ store for the younger kids to make their own personal "sketch" books, and just regular copy paper to make journals or diaries for the older kids.

(updated from my LJ)

Just a quick note that I finally got all of my [community profile] hoggywartyxmas Fest fic posted at AO3. This was my first time entry into the fest, and I'm very glad I was able to participate as it may be the last 'formal' showing of the fest. Although there are hopes the community will continue on in other ways.

The fic: All Things Happen for a Reason was written as a gift from a prompt from [personal profile] cabepfir . It is SS/HG.

Summary:
It's eight years post war,2006

Severus has been wandering the world searching for something: a new place, a new life, a new start, could he find what he wanted back where it all began?

Hermione has more than physical scars from the war. Although she teaches at Hogwarts, in her off time she lives a quiet life in a Muggle village under an assumed name.

Can two people damaged by their past find a new beginning?

AN: Thanks go out to my wonderful beta, delphipsmith for all her hard work and patience. She is truly awesome!

Also to [personal profile] cabepfir, Thank you for the wonderful prompts, there were two I was drawn to, and it was a hard choice. I hope you're pleased with how it turned out.

Also thanks to the fest owner: [personal profile] therealsnape, and mod: [profile] kellychambliss for all of their hard work in putting it all together.

And a final FYI note: in posting at AO3 I divided the last chapter into two as it was over 9k words. So there are now eight chapters: including a short prologue and seven chapters. Also I added a short bit to the last chapter (between 300-350 words), to fill a plot hole I hadn't previously noticed. ;)

And I can now reveal my gift for [personal profile] cabepfir: All things Happen for a reason

Summary: It's eight years post war. 2006

Warnings: no physical violence, but a couple of possible emotionally distressing scenes
Disclaimer: I do not own these characters, I make no money here
Author's Notes: This fic has drama, humor, not quite romance yet - but a possibility of it. And fluff, but also angst, (is there a category for flangst?) I would like to thank my beta [personal profile] delphipsmith for her exceptional beta skills and hard work. She is amazing! Any mistakes are my own because I tend to keep tweeking it even after it's come back from her. To my giftee [personal profile] cabepfir: Thank you for the wonderful prompts, there were two I was drawn to, and it was a hard choose. I hope you're pleased with how it turned out.

At some point soon I will also be posting it at my AO3.

Stole this from Toblass

The first 5 people to comment (and more if I have the funds/time/energy) will receive a surprise from me at some point in 2023. Anything from a card, postcard, a scribble, something hand-made - really it could be anything - who knows! It will happen when the mood comes over me and I find something that I believe would suit you and make you happy.

If you are feeling the vibe, post this in your own journal and pay it forward. Let's do more kind and loving things for each other in 2023. Without any reason other than to make each other smile and show that we think of each other.

PM me your address! Feel free to include an idea, theme, a link to a wish list! Or tell me what you collect (coyote skulls, nail polish, gum, etc etc etc)! or whatever else you love!

Please note that you can sign up for a surprise even if you choose not to put this in your own journal. I know not everyone can.

I was surprised today when my hubby brought in yesterday's mail and there was a package for me. We've been getting so much stuff lately as I do most of my Christmas shopping online, but I noticed this label was different. Do you see down there in the corner? It says Owl Post. Oh my.

I know many of my flisties are making similar posts, and while I hope LJ remains and never goes away, it makes sense to be prepared. I am at Dreamwidth with the same user name: madeleone. I have only used the site as a back-up, up til now, and I will admit there are parts of DW I find hard to navigate but I guess I may have to learn to muddle my way through as I have no other connection to all the fandom friends I've made on LJ.

ETA: I do have a FB (well, two actually, one for RL connections and one for online fanfic friends, etc.) The second one is Madeleone Demonj. But, in all honesty I will admit I'm not a huge fan of FB and rarely post, but do lurk or comment there occasionally.

Just an FYI, Aurette has started posting her fics at AO3.

As some of you may recall, three of her fics got booted from FFN several years back in one of their 'purges' and had been archived at another website, fanfic junkies, I think it was. Anyhow it has now disappeared and people were PM'ing her on FFN asking her to post the fics over at AO3. She said she remembered I'd sent her an invite 'a bajillion years ago…' and she'd finally dug it up and figured out how to sign in and post. So she's starting with those fics and I believe eventually plans to repost all her stuff there. (just to be clear this is a reposting of her old fics, not any new stuff).

Still, I was quite happy and surprised to get the notice from AO3 that she had posted there. So I checked back in my email archives, and sent her a note, hoping the addy was still in use (hard for me to believe, but it had been six years since we last corresponded). Luckily it was still active and she responded and explained the reasons she was posting at AO3. I added my 2 cents and said I think it is a much more stable platform than FFN, with no worries of fics being booted or the archive disappearing like so many of the smaller ones have.

Anyway, just want to pass this info on to anyone interested.

Yes, I got a sweet little Drarry ficlet from [livejournal.com profile] enchanted_jae for my birthday yesterday. It's titled: Sex and Strawberries and is posted at her LJ.

I had a very nice birthday. Hubby got me a card with a restaurant gift card and a some scratch off lottery tickets (which unfortunately did not yield a jackpot for my birthday, but it was still fun to hope for a while that they might). LOL! I got calls from both of daughters during the afternoon along with greetings from the grandkids and also got gift cards from both as well as a new suncatcher to add to my collection from oldest daughter. My younger son who lives closest came out for dinner of beef roast with potatoes and carrots slow cooked in the crockpot with a sampler cheesecake for dessert. I even got a late call from oldest son who is notorious for not remembering anyone's birthday. So all in all a very nice birthday indeed.

Here is a pic of my new suncatcher. I think he needs a name but I'm not sure what. Any suggestions?

I am finally posting the fic I wrote for the last sshg_giftfest back in 2019 to AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/33644014/chapters/83606734. two chapters are up and I will have the remaining three up within the next several days. It is of course already posted fully at https://sshg-giftfest.livejournal.com/96358.html, and I will eventually get it up over at ff.net. It was written for [livejournal.com profile] dreamy_dragon73 and the title is Charitable Endeavours.

Dreamy's prompt was: Lucius decides to go into politics. Severus thinks this is a really bad idea and ropes in Hermione to help dissuade Lucius. Does she agree? And do they succeed? It was a fun prompt to work with, so kudos to Dreamy for such an inspiring prompt and also huge hugs and thanks go to my lovely cheerleader [livejournal.com profile] morethansirius, and my amazing beta and sshg_giftfest mod [livejournal.com profile] delphipsmith.

As usual, I had meant to get this posted long ago, but at times I should be called the great procrastinator. LOL!

Remember back in 2020 some of us here joined in a pay-it-forward meme. I sent things to five LJ friends, (mostly hand knit wool socks, but a few got other things they mentioned they liked). Anyway, I was super excited when I got a package in the mail from one of my LJ friends, [livejournal.com profile] reynardo. Thanks so much my friend for the lovely gift.

gift from reynardo.jpg

The adorable Snape on the left is an embroidered iron-on applique. My daughter J, has one of those craft thingeys to make iron on decals for t-shirts, so we're trying to think of Snape quotes or memes to go with him. I told her I don't want “Always”.

The little bundle next to Snapey when unsnapped and opened up becomes a full sized tote bag. Very cool, I can throw it in my purse or luggage and have a handy tote in an instant.

Next is a koala bear book mark and Severus Snape postcard. Also included was a lovely handwritten letter, bringing to my mind my childhood days before we had email and instant messages when my mom would get letters from family far away.

If anyone has any ideas for my t-shirt quote/saying throw 'em out there. Right now I'm considering: “Snape, Snape, Severus Snape”, but I'm definitely open for other suggestions.

Thanks again, Rey, and I hope you enjoy those "world traveler" socks and Michigan Postcard.

Things I've been up to:

Mostly laying low, staying in, and keeping warm, what with all the cold weather and snow we've been having here.

But Mr. Madeleone and I did venture out last week to receive our first Covid vaccination, we had made an appointment in advance. I must say I was quite impressed with the efficiency of their set-up. The clinic was set up by Meijer (a large super-store chain here in the midwest, for those that might not know who that is) and they teamed up with SVSU, our local university. So there was signage set up directing us to the correct building and parking lot, with campus security and student volunteers directing everyone where to go. They even brought forms right to our car to fill out so we were all set to go when we got inside. There were no long lines or waits as I had read of in some places. Everything ran like clockwork: we checked in, verified our appt. time, got sent to a booth to turn in insurance info and got a preprinted info pack, then sent to a booth to get the vaccine, then to a waiting area to wait our 15 minutes to make sure there was no reaction, and then we were done. In and out in less than half an hour, and our appointment for the second shot is already set up for next month. We will feel more secure once we've gotten both shots as hubby especially has serious medical issues that put him at a very high risk.

This is the view that greeted me this morning from my bedroom window. A beautiful winter wonderland. What a great way to start the New Year off with everything clean and fresh and new. Although they look like black and white photos this is actually in full color, the sky is a soft gray, and the snow and trees and yard coated with fresh snow.

I went out to get groceries yesterday figuring that hopefully the store wouldn't be too crowded being New Years Day and a lot of folks would be home watching bowl games or whatever. The roads were fairly clear when I left home but by the time I left the store there was a snow/sleet/freezing rain mix coming down. I was happy to get home and hunker down. It ended up being not huge amount of snow, but enough to blanket the trees with a beautiful lacy coat of white.

Sorry I'm so late in posting this. We finished up our 24 days of the 2020 Funco advent calendar with two more dupicate characters of Dumbledore and Harry (although of course in different costumes). So that was a bit disappointing that with so many choices available they opted to do repeats. Three Dumbledores, three Harrys, two Rons, and Technically two Hermiones (although one was the polyjuiced version). In spite of the dupes, I still loved doing the reveal each day and collecting all these adorable mini funco characters. I will display them with my other HP stuff so I can continue to enjoy them throughout the year.

Day 23: Dumbledore # 3 has a decidedly Santa-ish look with a tassled cap and fur trimmed robes.

day 23.jpg

Day 24: Harry #3 is wearing the ever popular Weasley sweater.

day 24.jpg

And for our final look-see, a group shot of the entire 2020 Funco advent calender crew!

entire 2020 funco advent crew.jpg

Well, I had a lot of fun with this! Thanks go to my daughter K for giving me something to look forward to each day and adding to my HP addiction. Hope you all enjoyed the journey with me. Happy Holidays and here's hoping the coming year is better than the last!!
madeleone: (Default)
Sunday, day 20 yielded another duplicate (I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed in getting another duplicate character when there are so many others to chose from). This time Ron Weasley arrived, luckliy in a Weasley sweater with a big R on it, (or else, it's possible I might have mistaken him for Percy, Charlie or BilL).

On Monday, day 21 Fawkes flew out and it appears it may be a burning day, as he is perched atop a pile of flames and he's very colorful and beautiful.

Today, Day 22 Finally Hagrid has joined the group, and Fang was ever so happy to have his master show up. I'd been waiting all along for Hagrid--surely they wouldn't leave him out--so I was as happy as Fang was to see him.

Well, only two days left, I wonder who those days will send me. I hope I get the other two heads of house, Flitwick and Sprout.

Days 20, 21, & 22.jpg
madeleone: (Default)
Well, I'm certainly feeling a little bit smug as I acurately predicted on Wednesday (or at least expressed a hope for) all of the last three arrivals: Luna on the 17th, George on the18th, and Neville today. Perhaps I should consider getting a mastery in Divination

George is identical to Fred aside from the Initial on his Weasley jumper. Unless he's Gred and Fred is Forge, or Fred is gred and George is Forge or..... Oh my goodness, you'll have to figure it out for yourself, these two have me all discombobulated--tricksie twins!

An in case you're wondering the thing in Nevill's arms is The Monster Book of Monsters I thought at first it might be Trevor but after squinting a bit, I realized it was a book.

day 18.jpg

If you'll notice in the background, it seems Dumbledore has knocked Hedgewig off his pedestal. Perhaps he felt as Headmaster he deserved to be head and shoulders above the crowd. Ahhh... but our wily owl has had the last laugh and I don't think Dumbles even realizes it yet. (see below the cut.)

madeleone: (Default)
I was so pleased to find Luna behind door #17. She is one of my favorite of the HP characters so I'm happy she's been included.

day 17.jpg

So I'm hoping for Luna's head of House to follow her and show up tomorrow. :)
madeleone: (Default)
Day 15 yeilds another duplicate... kinda... and yet, not exactly. It's Polyjuiced Hermione--the feline edition. For a cat/person she's actully very cute but I'm sure she doesn't appreciate that fact though. Poor Hermione, or is that Purrrrrr Hermione?

day 15.jpg

And for Day 16: Another Weasley joins our little party. It's Ginny!

Day 16.jpg

Our HP mini crew has grown so much, only eight days left, I wonder who is left to come? We only have two heads of houses so far, I hope we get Flitwick and Sprout, and of course Hagrid. And Luna and Neville, and George! How can we have Fred and not George! Or maybe Lupin or Sirius. Will there be any bad guys? Other than Draco there are no bad guys and honestly Draco is not really all that bad. Who do you want to see most in the next eight days?

And just wondering if anyone else noticed in the background of the first picture that Severus and Hermione are definitely edging much closer together. And in the second pic, I know the background is a little blurry but I'm postive that Crooksie is staring hungrily at Hedgewig and I can practically hear him screaming "Winner, winner chicken dinner... or owl will do too!"
madeleone: (Default)
I think we may have entered an AU, because days 12 and 13 provided dupicate characters, although in different costumes. My son suggested perhaps they represent different books/movies. I thInk I shall go with the theory that they have used a time turner and showed up here at the same time as their dopplegangers.

Saturday, Harry showed up in his pj's holding up the invisiblity cloak. Sunday, another version of Dumbledore arrived (I actually like this one better). And today, the arrival of my first Malfoy--Draco.

I'm a bit disappointed to have repeat characters as I thought I'd have 24 different characters to play with. But it's all good I guess, now I have choices to switch in and out. ;-)

Days 12.13. & 14.jpg
madeleone: (Default)
Apologies to all those waiting for the daily reveal yesterday, I got side tracked and never posted, so today you get a two-fer.

Day 10: Crookshanks has arrived and I zoomed in for a close up. You can actually see his whiskers and eybrows. (I appreciate the addition of the familiars/pets, but I sincerely hope Scabbers isn't waiting in the wings).

He's here! I cackled a bit and actually did a little dance when I opened the door and saw him through the packaging. He's just a cute as we suspected. (except... again with the tiny feet). (Sighs).

Notice how he ended up next to Hermione. I think she's checking him out. I swear she keeps glancing at him from the corner of her eye.

day 9.jpg

Here's a group shot too, although Fang managed not to get in the picture, he's probaly out looking for Hagrid.

day 9 group shot.jpg
madeleone: (Default)
Poor Fang, he's waiting patiently for Hagrid to show up. I hope he won't have to wait too long!

I'll make Hagrid my guess for tomorrow, just to help Fang out.

DAY 8.jpg
madeleone: (Default)
None of us guessed right today. But [livejournal.com profile] toblass and [livejournal.com profile] mollywheezy came close with Ginny--at least she is one of the Weasley siblings. I'm fairly sure it's Fred due to the F on his Weasley sweater, but you know those tricksie twins, it could be George dressed as Forge. (Again with the small feet, to help him remain upright I had to cast a sticking charm on his feet too!)

I'm going to guess tomorrow's visitor will be George or maybe Gred.

Day 7 close up.jpg

I've got a second pic as we had a not-so-little visitor join our group today. It's Sven Svenson, a giant lumberjack from the North woods who was wandering by and decided to join our fun(co) little group temporarily. (He will eventually go to live with my daughter J who collects nutcrackers. Personally, they kind of creep me out, but she adores them and since I found him marked 25% off today he came home with me to await his chance to move to her house).

I also added new lights to the Charlie Brown tree on the right.  And have decided that the roly poly guy hanging out on the roof is actually Peeves in his Christmas Elf disguise.

Day 7.jpg
madeleone: (Default)
And toby wins accolades for right guess. And he truly is a Free Elf, as he came complete with a teeny tiny little sock in his hand, although I'm sure you won't be able to see it in the pics. And I finally got a chance to stop at the dollar store and buy some bling to dress up their set. (just noticed I still have my fall/thanksgiving table cloth on, guess I need to change that soon!)

Dobby had the same balance problem  as Hermione, (I believe the technical term is small-feetitis) and the last sticking charm I cast was not holding very well. So I found some more effective magic (I used to have glue dots but couldn't find them and the $ store didn't have any, but they had this tacky/putty like stuff for hanging posters and a little wad of that seems to working so far).

I'm posting a close up under the cut, but wanted you to see that our friends now have a more festive atmosphere to celebrate the season in.

Anyone care to guess who we will meet next?
