An old fangirl friend reappears

Just an FYI, Aurette has started posting her fics at AO3.

As some of you may recall, three of her fics got booted from FFN several years back in one of their 'purges' and had been archived at another website, fanfic junkies, I think it was. Anyhow it has now disappeared and people were PM'ing her on FFN asking her to post the fics over at AO3. She said she remembered I'd sent her an invite 'a bajillion years ago…' and she'd finally dug it up and figured out how to sign in and post. So she's starting with those fics and I believe eventually plans to repost all her stuff there. (just to be clear this is a reposting of her old fics, not any new stuff).

Still, I was quite happy and surprised to get the notice from AO3 that she had posted there. So I checked back in my email archives, and sent her a note, hoping the addy was still in use (hard for me to believe, but it had been six years since we last corresponded). Luckily it was still active and she responded and explained the reasons she was posting at AO3. I added my 2 cents and said I think it is a much more stable platform than FFN, with no worries of fics being booted or the archive disappearing like so many of the smaller ones have.

Anyway, just want to pass this info on to anyone interested.

Fantastic news! I hate the idea of fanfic disappearing, especially the really good ones, and AO3 seems super stable. Thanks for letting us know!

It is great news. And I agree about AO3, I googled stats and as of Dec of last year it had over 4 million users and 7 million fanworks. It's well established, used world-wide, and isn't going away anytime soon.

This is music to my ears. I'm so happy more of our HP authors are posting on AO3 too because of it's stability. And I would encourage any who can to support AO3's fund raisers when they have them. Five dollars may not sound like much, but with so many people who read there five dollars could add up to a tidy sum. I am all about preserving and saving the stories that drew a lot of us to fanfic in the beginnings.

I've noticed that Subversa has put several of her stories on AO3, as well.

If we "oldtimers" don't step up to the plate, the older stories may be lost forever. There is a group on FB who are a wealth of information for finding the old stories. And TPP is slowly being updated, it has new modern computers and servers that can work with all the new web standards, and the software has be rewritten so it will work. Covid put a dent in how much time the people who know how to update the stories to the new web site, so that part still has a way to go, but I so much want to see TPP survive!!!

I agree with you 100%. I didn't realized Subversa had started posting her stuff there, I'll have to add her to my subscriptions.

I also try to donate to various fandom causes and as you said even a small donation helps. As of Dec. 2020 AO3 had over 4 million users, if only 1% donated a few bucks it makes a substantial donation over all.

In the past I've supported a number of the smaller archives like ASH, TPP, etc. And some freeware stuff too, one of my faves is Calibre which is an ebook library organizer. I love that one because I can have all my ebooks no matter where I bought them, and my fanfic (those that I want to save) all in one place and it makes it easy to search and find. I have over four thousand book/stories in my library.

I usually try to donate to these causes a couple times a year--like my mom used to say, "every little bit helps."

I've supported a lot of these sites, too. I give to Wikipedia, too, because so many folks go there to find out about "this-that-and-the-other." After the holidays I'll try to give to Ash and the Wiktt Archive. I wish I could write blank checks for these sites, but my last name is not Musk.

I like your mom's philosophy. A lot of people donating five bucks can work miracles.
