It seems that Ashwinder's's Home page is back up now, but nothing is working properly at all. If I click on any of the fics on the home page it takes you to a blank page. When I click on various categories it either doesn't work at all or takes me to that page, such as titles, members, etc, but then you can't go to any of the ones shown or go to other title pages. Same for other catgories. All of SH other archives still show an error message. I'm worried again now. :(

Then I learned yesterday in a post by [livejournal.com profile] dreamy_dragon73, That Digital Quill is down. A comment by [livejournal.com profile] shiv5468 confirmed that it is down due to being hacked and it's not coming back. WHile DQ wasn't a huge archive it had a lot of really great fics. :(

This is why I am a paranoid bitch and save the fics I love to my hard drive and archive my own fics in a variety of places.

I know. The archives are not permanent =(. How sad digital quill is dead.

The last site standing may be FFn, because we've lost owl, Ash is in trouble, and the quill is dead.

I'm doing the same thing: downloading favourites and posting at various archives. Actually only to TPP and AO3 currently. My sshg goes to Ashwinder, too. I used to post to OWL as well and I think I have a few fics on Granger Enchanted (oops must check), but my main archives are TPP and AO3 for now.

After a few of my favorite fics disappeared I started saving copies on my computer and Nook. I also started posting my own fic on PP and I'm considering AO3, plus I back up my fic on LJ and Insane Journal because my computer has died on me and I've lost my files far too many times.

Amen. I set up a Wordpress blog for my smaller work, but I think I'm going to start adding my main work as well. Archives are starting to fall down at an alarming rate.

I always save copies of my own stuff, but I don't always save copies of other people's work. Guess I should start. Where I work we have a decent-ish collection of old fanzines -- the purple mimeo stapled variety -- but its sto think how much fanfic will be lost as sites come and go, and nobody is actively collecting it for posterity...

I archive off the comments to my fic. And the view counts. I've been having flashbacks to the demise of Yak Butter Sandwich, which was a Dr Who fic archive in the 90s.

This is why I keep putting cash in the AO3 hat, even though I realize it could collapse as easily as any other site and the comments sometimes drive me batty, and I'm looking seriously at expanding to WattPad.

But ultimately I need to wrap the fan fic and work on my o fic. The bittersweet part is this sadness might spur me onto that phase. Neither paper nor digital books will bite the dust soon, and self-publishing minimizes the fear of a publisher going bankrupt and putting my books out of print (Ellora's Cave, I'm watching you).

Digital Quill is gone??? Nooooooo!

Well, many of my favorite fics are from SSHG Exchange, so as long as LJ is up, I'm safe.
