WARNING

She looked up as the door opened.  No one else knew that ever since being stuck together on a joint arithmancy project back in October, she and Draco had been meeting secretly in this  study room hidden discretely off the restricted section. They had somehow developed a study relationship of grudging respect for each other, although they still appeared to be bitter enemies in public.  They were both good students and had found that their study styles seemed to mesh well,  she had gotten so  much more done with Draco than she ever would have accomplished with Ron or Harry as study mates.

She had of late taken to thinking of him as Draco instead of Malfoy.  She’d even begun calling him by his first name at least when they were in private, even though he still only ever called her Granger, never Hermione.  She tried not to let it bother her although it hurt her feelings a little if she dwelled on it…..but hey, it was better than what he used to call her.

“You’re late tonight,“ she said glancing up. His appearance startled her, he looked disheveled, wild eyed, almost….fearful.  “What’s wrong?”

“I can’t stay.   I came to tell you something, Granger…..something important.”

“OK, what is it?”

He hesitated, unsure of how to proceed.  “I don’t have to tell you there is great conflict in our world.   Bad times are coming. War.”

“A brilliant man would find a way not to fight a war.”

He snorted in reply, “I am far from brilliant, Granger. There is nothing I could say or do that could stop what is coming.  The thing you need to know is that it’s coming much sooner than you think,  sooner than anyone knows.”

“Draco, what do you know?  What’s going to happen? You can’t just say things like that and not elaborate.”  she pleaded with him.

“I can’t give you details,”  he paused as if struggling with himself.  “Sometimes people are in a position where they have to do things they don’t really want to do.  They have no choice.”

“We always have choices, Draco,” she replied softly.

“What if you had to choose between protecting the life of someone you love or hurting and bringing devastation to someone you care about.  Who do you choose?”

“I don’t know.  Maybe there is some way to protect both,” she offered.

“I can’t see it,  I can’t see how.”  he looked desolate.  “It’s too late anyway.  The gears are already in motion, they can’t be stopped.    Don’t wander the halls of the castle tonight, Granger.  Stay in your room, ward the doors, use the strongest wards you know.  Don’t come out no matter what you hear.”

“My Gods, Draco, you’re scaring me!”

“Good, I want you to be scared... I want you to be terrified… I want you to be safe.”

He turned and grabbed the door handle meaning to leave but he paused, looking up at the ceiling for a moment before he said quietly,   “I want you to know, Hermione, if I had one more night to live… I’d want to spend it with you.”  He went through the door never looking back.

“Oh no, Draco.  What have you done?”  she cried.
