Regarding Michigan, I think most people over here would give you a "Huh?" over the mitten thing. We tend to know where the US is, and can probably point to California, Alaska, Texas, Florida and maybe the cities of Washington DC, New Orleans and New York. However, the rest tends to be a matter of indifference. It's a shame, seeing as how your nation is so huge and varied and culturally diverse, but then I've come across a fair few USAtians who haven't the first idea about Europe, so fair's fair.
