Now that the weekend is here, after a full and busy week, I can finally relax and reflect on my wonderful fangirl meet-up on Tuesday. [livejournal.com profile] christev was in Detroit for a work conference and had asked if any fangirls were available for a meet-up. I am not exactly from the Detroit area, living about two hours away by car, but what's two hours when fangirl fun is in store? And I have Tuesdays off so this worked out perfectly for me.

Luckily for me my oldest daughter lives in the Metro area about 40 minutes from downtown, so after work on Monday I drove down to her house to spend the night. Then on Tuesday morning I got to hang out and have coffee with daughter, K, for awhile, until around noon I headed off for the big city. Being a country mouse I am just a little nervous driving around in heavy traffic, but being a Tuesday and mid day it was perfect. I'd asked my son-in-law, B, the best place to park closest to the Ren-Cen where Chris was staying, (he is from the greater Detroit area and works right downtown). He suggested rather than park at the Ren, I should park right at Greektown where we were having dinner later with [livejournal.com profile] clairvoyant and [livejournal.com profile] bluestocking79, because there is easy access right off the highway, and the parking structure at the Greektown Casino is free as opposed to paying a bundle to park all day downtown. What a smart guy, no wonder my daughter picked him! Plus there are a people mover stops (detroit's downtown monorail system for getting around quickly) right in the casino and at the ren-cen, so for 75 cents I got a ride straight to my destination.

Once I got there I called Chris and she said she'd come down and find me. Easier said that done! That is a huge place, HUGE! I think that it must have taken us 20 minutes to find each other as we wandered around talking on our cell phones: I'm on this level where are you?... I'm here, I can see this, can you see this?... No. What are you wearing?... I can see the cars displayed at the bottom... Me too, I'm one level up... Oh I'm two levels up. I can see the Cadillac sign... I don't see it. I see a sign for the food court... Let's meet at the food court.... I see McDonalds do you?... No I don't ...Then around a curve I see this woman talking on a cell, we point at each other, "Is it you?" Finally we meet. Wow! what an ordeal, LOL!

We agreed just to have lunch in the foodcourt and sat to visit. We sat there for over two hours chatting and getting to know each other. My younger daughter has never met in person friends she only knew online and had asked me 'Mom, what if you meet an online friend and end up not liking them in person?'  Well, that would be awkward I guess, but it certainly wasn't the case here. We talked about ourselves, and families, and work and best of all fandom! It was so nice just to sit and talk with someone who has the same interest (obsession) in the HP fandom, and SS/HG in particular. Other people just don't get it. (In fact I'd had to explain just the night before to S-I-L, B, exactly what fanfic was, as he'd asked where I knew these friends from and what our common interests were. Both my girls and one of my sons know of my involvement and that I actually write fanfic, but for the most part in RL most people don't know about my secret life or if the topic of fanfic does come up they just don't "get it")

After sitting in the food court for half the afternoon, Chris asked if I wanted to go hang out in her room and visit until it was time to meet Clairvoyant and Bluey for dinner. Her room was on the 60-something floor with a great view of downtown, the river, and part of Canada. We sat and yakked for the rest of the afternoon, discussing fandom, favorite fanfics, and favorite authors, about going to con--which I've never had a chance to do--how we've made great friends in the fandom, etc. It was just a really great day.

Sometime between 6 and 7 we got a call that Clairvoyant and Bluey were there and went downstairs to meet them. I'd met Clairvoyant for lunch before when she was doing beta work for me but had never met Bluey so it was nice to put a face with the name. Clarivoyant drove us all over to Greektown where we got to have dinner in a really lovely Greek restaurant--which I can't for the life of me remember the name of. We had another couple hours of visiting, but then about 9:15 I decided I should go because I had a 2 hour drive to get home. Luckily for me, the restaurant was right next to the casino and I was able to easily get back to where my car was parked and made my way home arriving there about 11:30.

All in all I had a wonderful day and suggest to everyone, if you ever have a chance to get together with other fangirls, definitely go for it. It was a fun day and like I said it's great to put a face with the name and to spend some time with others who really understand our love for the fandom. After talking to Chistev I am really hoping that I can go to Misticon 2015. I'm going to try to make it happen,

This begs the question two hours in WHAT DIRECTION? (if it's west, we should get coffee or something!) I would have loved to join you guys, but I couldn't justify going over there two weekends in a row what with finding someone to watch the kids and get hubby to work (we share a car).

I'm glad you had fun, Christev is lovely. And so is Clairvoyant - I've met them both a couple of times! I haven't met Bluey in person yet, but she is lovely, as well. I just love fangirl meetups :D

Yes, yes, come to Misticon 2015! Then I can meet you too! Isn't Christev lovely? It is funny to imagine that she might turn out to be a terrible dangerous internet stranger! >:-) Mwa ha ha ha ha. I am so glad you got to have fangirl fun.

I'm so glad you had such a lovely time!
And I totally agree! Meeting other fangirls is wonderful. I wouldn't have met [livejournal.com profile] chivalric55 otherwise and she's become a RL friend now as well.
I'm still hoping to be able to meet more of my fandom friends at some point.

I met Chris in New Hampshire and found her to be an absolute delightful, funny woman. Meeting was one of the highlights of Misti-Con and I'm glad you were able to spend time with her, too!
