Hermione entered the room to find Draco slumped on the sofa, a desolate look on his face. Severus stood by the hearth, arms crossed eyeing their guest with a look of disgust.

 

“What's the matter? Is something wrong, Draco?” Hermione asked in concern.

 

“Problems of the heart,” sneered Severus.

 

“You needn't sound so smug, Severus. My heart's breaking here.”

 

Hermione tried to suppress a smile. “Ever the drama queen, hey Draco? OK, tell Auntie H. what the problem is.”

 

“You mock my pain, Hermione. I think the great bat's starting to rub off on you.”

“I'm sorry, Draco. Seriously, what's wrong. Tell me.” She sank to the sofa and lay a hand on his shoulder in comfort.

 

“Gabrielle says we're getting too serious. She needs space, we should see other people.” He looked miserable. “I don't want to see anyone else, Hermione. I think she is THE ONE.”

 

Glancing up at Severus she saw him roll his eyes dramatically, as if to say 'Oh please, spare me.' She responded with a slight shake of her head and a warning look that said 'Stop that right now.' Silent communication flowed between them.

“I've been warning you for years about your playboy ways and that this was going to happen someday,” admonished Severus. “After all the girls you've loved and left, the trail of broken hearts you've left in your wake, payback is a BITCH in capital letters, my dear boy.”

 

“If you can't say anything helpful then just shut the hell up!” Draco snarled, clearly ready to rip his godfathers head off.

 

“They say, 'what goes around comes around'. Karma and all that, you know, Draco.”

 

“Severus stop antagonizing him right now, you aren't helping matters.”

Turning to her childhood enemy and now good friend she picked his hand up in hers. “Look, Draco. I don't know for sure what to tell you. Believe it or not I cannot wave my magic wand and make it all better,” she said with a smile. “But you aren't going to win Gabrielle back with schemes, lies or elaborate plots. Go and talk to her, tell her how you really feel. Be honest. That's the best advice I can offer.”

 

“Will it work?” he whispered.

 

“Truly? I don't know. It's all up to her.”
